Directed by Elia Kazan, the film is one of my all-time favorites. It retells the Biblical story of Cain and Abel.
Bad boy Cal (James Dean) competes with his brother Aron (Richard Davalos) for his father’s affection while struggling to connect with the mother who abandoned them after birth; a mother who now runs a brothel in neighboring Monterey. Cal tries for redemption, but is rejected by his father. In a tragic ending, Cal seeks revenge against his brother—the favored son—by taking him to their mother and shattering his illusions of her.
I watched it this past weekend while my older son and hubby were away camping. Unfortunately, the don't share my enthusiasm for the film. However, my younger son (Zane) was forced to endure parts of it during our mommy/son time. Thanks, Zane.
