Telluride Film Festival

This weekend was the 36th Telluride Film Festival. Despite being members of the “pass-less”, my friend, Pam, and I made the three-hour trek to the quaint little mountain town to check it out.

I didn’t go with any particular goal in mind, other than I like being in Telluride and have fond memories of the town: skiing the vastness of the mountain with Jeff; dining at the Mexican restaurant where the host had mistaken Zane’s feeding tube for a string and attempted to pull it out of his mouth; parking in a metered area (while I slowly raked my purse for money) while Jeff quickly ran into the outdoor store to buy camping necessities. Oh yes, and the camping and hiking we have done there, as well.

After being turned away at the courthouse where Nicolas Cage was speaking, we meandered over to the Palm Theater to people watch. Since we were there, we decided to get into a ticket buyers line for The Road (this is the line for those of us who did not have the forethought—or money—to buy an actual pass). If there are enough seats remaining after the pass holders have been allowed inside, then we get the opportunity to buy tickets and attend the screening, as well. Pam and I were numbers 2 and 3.

We waited for three hours in rain and shine, only to be turned away thirty minutes before the start. It was quite a popular event, made more so by the fact that Viggo Mortensen and his co-star, Kodi Smit-McPhee, were present. However, the three-hour wait was very entertaining. We met some amazing people in line: Patricia (an eighty-something who attends upwards of ten film festivals a year and seems to know quite a few people in filmland); Lydia (a Telluride local who is also an artist); and Keya (a documentary filmmaker). It made the day a worthwhile one. Plus, amidst the dumping skies, Starz umbrellas, and rain ponchos, we caught a brief glimpse of Viggo and Kodi emerging from their car.

After picking Zane up in Ridgway—where Jeff and Justin have been spending the holiday weekend—we made the dark, twisty, and mountainous drive on the Million Dollar Highway out of Ouray—after getting pick-me-uppers at Mouse’s Chocolates, of course. We arrived home around 11:00.

It was a nice adventure at the Telluride Film Festival without seeing a single film.

  2. I love outings that net meeting cool people without even accomplishing the original goal. :) That sounds like a lot of fun.
