Pitch Madness

Have you seen this? Maybe you’ve already entered. It’s way cool! Brenda Drake is holding a pitch contest. But you better hurry! The submission deadline is this Saturday, August 24th.

What is this pitch madness thing of which you speak?

It’s a contest where agents compete in a game against their peers for pitches. Slush readers will pick through the pitches and select the top 60 to compete in the agent round on September 6th.  Your pitch cannot exceed 35 words.

So hop on over to Brenda Drake Writes for full details and see if your pitch has what it takes to compete.

And if you’re wondering if I plan to enter, the answer is…I’m not sure yet. My YA ghost story, HAUNTED, is complete and in need of an agent or publisher. I love my story and characters, and I believe in the novel. But pitches…well, they’re way harder to write than the novel itself is. So…we’ll see.

  1. Nothing tried, nothing done. Try and capture the essence of the novel in a sentence. I know you can do it.

  2. I find writing the pitch easy. It is the synopsis that I trip over. What helps me is thinking of my favorite movies and breaking them down into the quickest description as possible....
Jaws. A sheriff afraid of water sets out to kill the giant man eating shark that threatens the sea side community he is sworn to protect. Something like that. Our MC usually has something that gets in the way of their goal. Then, what is their goal? Easy peasy lemon squeezy:)

  3. See, I'm with Alex. That's not a lot of words. But I worked on one while brushing my teeth this morning. I'll revisit it later today to find out if I'm still impressed with myself :-)

  4. Good luck with your pitch!

Maybe I'll try to pitch for my MG now, but it's going to be a challenge with such a low word count!

  7. I did this last year, and got through to the agent round, but no "hits". Lot of fun though. Pitches are definitely one of the hardest thing, especially Tweet-length!
