Six Things I Did (or Plan to Do) Today…

  1. Summer “homework” with the boys. I guess I can’t completely release the inner teacher in me. Both boys are now out of school for less than a week, and we’re already into supplemental work to avoid regression. Thankfully (for the most part), they don’t mind
  2. Trip preparation. Hubby and I are going climbing at City of Rocks while my in-laws watch the boys. It’s been so long since I’ve touched granite that I’m not even sure I know how to put my climbing shoes on anymore.
  3. Transplant. Before your mind turns grisly…I am moving my quick-growing seedlings to larger pots today. Unfortunately, I can’t plant anything in the ground because a) the soil isn’t wonderful and b) the deer will eat everything. They’re like rodents on a larger scale.
  4. Practice baseball with the oldest. He’s getting pretty good. He had one of those hate/hate relationships with the game when he first started. Now he likes it. He had two hits in last week’s game off the intimidating pitching machine (no, this is not a nick-name for a wicked-armed eight-year-old; it’s an actual machine).
  5. Practice walking with the youngest. It’s our summer goal to get him walking with some assistance. The other day he took 105 (non-consecutive) steps, which is awesome for a kiddo who doesn’t walk on a regular basis.
  6. Revisions. I’m hoping to release my first YA novel, SUPERSTITIONS, this summer. Maybe July??? I finished reading and editing this weekend. Now it’s time for my first round of revisions. I’m already planning on a minimum of two significant revisions. I better get moving!

  1. Oh Susan, you have some wonderful things planned. You must have a bit of the home-scholler in you, and this is a good idea keeping education going through the summer.
    Enjoy you climbing expedition.
    Best regards.

    1. I do like homeschooling over the summer. But I like that the boys receive a variety of teaching methods throughout the school year, too. I used to teach at a public school, so I know the +s and the -s :-)

  4. Oh my goodness! You are such a good mom! I just told my middleschooler that I was sending her brother (kindergarten) to LaPetite for the summer so his brain won't turn to jelly. But you've shamed me. Maybe I'll keep him home and teach him myself.

    Then again...maybe not. :)

    1. Linda, Don't be silly :-) You're a great mom, too. I just can't let go of my teaching past is all. I may actually return to it if the whole writing thing doesn't work out.

    1. We forced Justin to do baseball. At first he hated it. Now he likes it a lot. I can't say "loves" yet. But I think the sport is growing on him.

    1. Sharon, I taught 3rd grade for a year and a half, then went to a reading specialist position for two more years. Then we went on the road, had Zane, and I haven't taught since.

  10. My son loves baseball. He absolutely refused to play t-ball because he thought using the T was ridiculous (he was 4 *sigh*). He did like that machine though. It's been a loooong time since those years - thanks for the memories!
