My So-Called Teenage Life

I haven’t done a blog hop in, like, forever. So when my writing partner at Moxie Writers, Rebecca Green Gasper, brought this one to my attention I was all over it.

Christa at Christa Rambles and Writes is co-hosting this humbling and slightly humiliating experience with Amy and Andrea.

Here’s the 4-1-1…

Step One: Sign up at Christa’s site
Step Two: Dust off those old sappy diaries burstingwith teenage angst or high school notebooks filled with bad poetry*
Step Three: Skim through them until you find something share-worthy
Step Four: On Monday, March 25 POST IT on your blog
Optional: We all love seeing old photos, so if you have one lying around of you as a teen, post that, too.

We'll all be hopping around peeking into each other's private teenage lives on March 25. *Didn't write in a journal or compose poetry as a teenager? Have no fear! Counterfeit entries are welcome. Pretend you're a teenager and write whatever you feel. Just make sure you're using your teenage voice.
And if you're still a teenager, hey, you're going to basically rock this blog hop.

So,unfortunately my entry is not counterfeit. It is authentic and somewhat mortifying. On a side note, I must maintain that I wrote this poem in college when I thought I was all that and a bag of chips. I didn't keep diaries in high school as I was too busy writing plays starring celebrities and fellow classmates with my friend Samantha. Anyway, time and distance can truly put a different spin on things.

I wrote this about a guy I liked in college who basically gave me the ‘ole heave ho after a few dates.

CONSUMED

You placed me
Among your egg shells shattered,
Twisted chicken bones,
And rotting potato skins.
Emptied me
Like a six pack
Of beer cans crushed,
Dumped with the news of yesterday.

Sandwiched
Between torn love letters
And the secreting milk carton
Dripping over my feet,
I try to scale my way out.
Until the Doritos Bag
From last night’s movie
Mushrooms and climbs
Around the can,
Enveloping me.

Pretty awesome, huh? Can you get a hint of the budding Joy Harjo or Sylvia Plath?

Yeah, me neither.

All right! Moving on. Time to visit the other participants in the blog hop. You’ll find the list here.

  5. This gives such a great visual. You don't always get that with poetry.

  8. I've never read Doritos in a poem, but what else do you expect from a sullen teen? :) Well done! I have posted entries from my jr. high diary on my blog before. They amuse me and give a peek into the real mind of a preteen! Boy craziness!
