Listening to Your Manuscript

There had been some buzz on some of the writers’ sites I belong to about electronic readers such as Kindle having the capability to read manuscripts back to the writer. I don’t have a Kindle, but I do have an iPad. So I did some research and found…

Speak it! Text to Speech.

For only $1.99, I loaded the app. on my iPad, copied my manuscripts into it, and immediately had the capability to listen to my own words read back to me from four different voices:

·         Heather, the American female

·         Ryan, the American male

·         Lucy, the British female

·         Graham, the British male

From iTunes:
“Copy emails, documents, web pages, PDF files, and more; paste them into Speak it!, and have the text spoken back to you with the highest quality text to speech engine available anywhere.”

I think it is pretty exciting! Would you like to hear your own words read back to you? Do you already have this capability through an electronic reader? I’m curious to hear your experiences. Technology always manages to impress me.

  1. Hi Susan, this sounds good. PDF readers do this too but you don't get the choice of a voice, which I think makes all the difference. Does it help your writing?

  2. This is a great tool, I need to interest my BW, the tipster, to this. Right now I have to listen to her reading her YA novel aloud to the point I am memorizing it. She has an I-phone,no I-pad, we'll have to investigate it.
Sorry, no nothing at this time.
Thank You for the information though.

  3. I've used several different programs just on my desktop computer, but they've all been so halting, it was hard for me to sit back and enjoy, let alone get a rhythm for it. Is this a problem on the e-reader or do you like it? I think it's a great concept!

  4. Thanks for the feedback.
Freya, the PDF reader I have on my iPad doesn't ready anything to me. I don't like being tethered to my computer, so I was super excited to find Speak it! It helps me to hear whether the work flows or not. Still, I have to read through it on my own to catch all of the problems (characters, plot, conflict). I do like the change in voices.

  5. Okay, that should say "read" not "ready".

  6. I've been meaning to try something like this. Thanks for reminding me about it!

If you get a chance, check out a fellow writer's zombie story and help me make him wear an embarrassing shirt next year! Details are here:

  7. That's so cool! My one writing profile has a speech capability, but the voice grates me like someone scratching a black board.

    *shudders*
