Finding Extrinsic Motivation

What do you do when you lose your inspiration to write? When you let other aspects of life take precedence over writing? You join Write On to Build On.  On January 10th, Theresa Milstein posted her solution on Facebook: Write everyday or pay $1 to a charity for each day you don’t. With my manuscripts languishing on my hard drive, I was in.

So were…

Our charitable organization of choice:

"We mobilize urban youth to rebuild the inner city with service and to help us build schools in remote villages worldwide."

I definitely want to contribute to buildOn, but Theresa’s idea has created a spark in me; I have yet to miss a day of writing. In fact, one of my YA manuscripts I promised myself I would finish last October is now in its final pages. Hopefully, I can keep the momentum going.

What external inspiration or motivators do you need to accomplish your goals?

  1. I just get an idea and do it until it's done. No other real motivators needed.

  2. I love the picture! I don't always write every day (so the charity would be rich) but I don't worry too much because inspiration always hits, normally when I least expect it.

  3. Sounds like a neat challenge. I tend to respond to positive reinforcement, i.e. write 3 pages and I get a cookie:)

  4. Isn't amazing how much gets accomplished with sticking to a writing routine.

  5. I think it's a great idea. Except I rarely don't write. No one would make much money from me that way. I get depressed if I don't write (or exercise). That's all the motivation I need. (Fortunately I do donate to charity, so I don't feel guilty about not participating). :D

  6. That picture is priceless. I finished my WiP, but now I need motivation to revise. I had these terribly unerealistic fantasies of turning out a perfect first draft, but that's just what they were- fantasties. Time to get motivated!

  7. Hahahaha that's brilliant! So even failing to write is a good thing. :-)

  8. Mostly fear! :) I'm pretty good at scaring myself silly with what will happen if I don't get my work done.

  9. For droughts of inspiration, I've heard that you should pick up that one book you really loved. To reread an author whose style you enjoy and would like to emulate some day.
