Over the past few months, I have dipped my toes into the Indie waters. And it’s one fast-moving current (in many senses of the phrase). It is both a rewarding and tiring process. Before deciding to self-publish, I simply wrote. Oh sure, I sent out an occasional query letter or worked on a pitch. But, for the most part, I’d strap on my writer hat in between gigs of playing mom, chef, housekeeper, chauffer, etc. and just write.
But the Indie life brings with it a whole new set of roles and caps to wear. Here are the ones I’ve had to play—and I am continuing to discover—as I move through the Indie world:
Writer: Still have to create new material.
Editor: Unless you want to spend a fortune on editing, it’s best to get your manuscript in as tip-top shape as possible before paying for editing services.
Graphic Designer: I’m on a bit of a budget, so I’m learning the ins and outs of Photoshop.
Business Manager: Need to keep the behind-the-scenes stuff in order, such as copyrights, trade name registrations (if you elect to go that route), budgeting, and all that other paperwork that doesn’t pertain the manuscript itself.
IT Person: It’s important to know proper formatting for the various venues where you plan to sell your book (Amazon, Smashwords, Apple, B&N).
Accountant: Keeping track of sales versus money invested. Not to mention preparation for tax time.
Marketer: I’m reading up on this one right now. Outside of social networking (which I really only do for the joy of it), I have no plan in place yet.
Legal Consultant: It’s important to have the proper legalese in place on the “inside cover” and know what to do to protect yourself. I guess my paralegal certification from long ago is finally going to pay off J
I find the Indie journey to be very rewarding. I've had jobs coordinating and directing projects for others. It's much more fun doing it for myself. But, I realize, the Indie path is not for everyone. And while agents and publishers are having to reevaluate their places in the market, I think they are still valid for many, many writers. As for me, life is way too short to wait around for a could-be deal.

Wow, the many hats of today's writers are crazy. Good luck to you! I love watching other people go through this point in their writing career. It's so exciting!
ReplyDeleteI'd be okay with about half of those jobs! But it's probably the other half that matter more when it comes to selling your book. You seem to have it all sussed though!
ReplyDeleteWow. I guess this can become overwhelming. Sounds like you have a good grasp on it at least.

I'm always so encouraged by posts like this. I'm attempting the traditional route, and I'm starting to realize that my book doesn't really fit the current market. So, I'm considering small presses or self publishing. If I go with the latter, I'll have to keep in mind everything that comes with going indie. Thanks for this helpful break down.
ReplyDeleteEach and everyone of those is true, can get tiring once in a while too. Not the writing part, but all the rest of them. I also hate sitting around, I would rather have it done and out then waiting months upon months, if ever.
ReplyDeleteI am so in awe of indie pubbers. There's so much to do and learn. It's intimidating!
ReplyDeleteGood advice here. I too found out on the way all the stuff that has to be considered when taking the indie route. It pays to know this stuff anyhow, so it's something writers should research anyway. Knowledge is power.
ReplyDeleteI find those who self-publish to be incredibly brave. I don't know if I have that kind of bravery. Good luck as you explore the indie world!
ReplyDeleteLOVE your attitude! Right now I'm a blogger, while helping my two teen sons to navigate the puberty white-water ride that seems to have limitless twists and turns...Someday, I hope to have someone pay me for my WIP. Meanwhile, no problem still working on it. It's my dessert: finish your other blogging priorities, THEN go play with Ian and Leah.
