WWW Wednesdays

Happy Stars and Stripes Day to all my American friends.

Fireworks have been canceled in our area of Colorado due to extreme wildfire danger.
But we'll make the best of the holiday anyway.

WWW Wednesdays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading.

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…
• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

This book hooked me right away, and I am rather picky when it comes to YA books. I’ve not read a whole lot of dystopian (outside of The Hunger Games trilogy), but so far so good with MATCHED.

I’ve been digesting this one slowly. I want to complete it before the start of the school year to help my older son.

My son and I are reading this one together. I’ve read it before as a third-grade classroom teacher, so I already know how wonderful it is.

What did you recently finish reading?

It took me awhile to get into this one, but it was a pretty good book. Not sure why so many people were proclaiming how amazing it was since it’s not necessarily rave-worthy to me.

Great character development and conflict in this book. Wasn’t expecting the ending either. I was a little angry at the women in the book for some of their choices (but I won’t say anything else, otherwise it will be a spoiler).

What do you think you’ll read next?

I really need to proof one of my YA manuscripts, which I plan to release in October. So that’s definitely on my TBR list.

I really want to read Bestest. Ramadan. Ever. by Medeia Sharif. I sampled it on my Kindle and fell in love with the voice and humor. But my finances are tight this month, so I may need to hold off until August.

I may read The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold. It’s sitting on my shelf, and it looks pretty compelling right now.

  6. I have Medeia's book to read as well. Haven't read any of the others, but my own. :) I'll look out for what you think of The Almost Moon. Interesting title.

  7. I think Google just ate my comment. I want to read Medeia's book as well. Have it lined up. The Almost Moon sounds good too. Glad the characters in mine affected you that way. ;)

  8. Happy Wednesday and July 4th Susan! I just finished Fire by Kristin Cashore. I was a little disappointed since I really loved Graceling, but Fire was okay. I'm reading Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice. I'm on page 100 or so and the story has yet to start, so I don't really think this is going to be my new favorite. Next? Maybe Bitterblue or The False Prince.

  10. Matched is on my list too! I haven't read Holes by Louis Sachar but I do remember his 6-8 or 9-12 series (don't remember) from my childhood called Marvin Redpost. Loved them!

  11. Not sure if my last comment went through but I really want to read Matched. I haven't read Holes but I remember another series by the same author called Marvin Redpost :)

  13. I love it when parents read a book with their children. I remember reading The Lord of the Rings with my son. He does too and often says it was one of the best times we had together. "Better than Disneyland?" "Yes, Mom."

Now that's saying something. Here's to reading together.

  15. I have Matched sitting on my self - I need to pull it off and get it read. And I loved The Lonely Bones by Sebold. I need to add The Almost Moon to my TBR list. Thanks for stopping by The Book Bag!

  16. I keep meaning to read the Book Thief but always end up putting it off. Not sure if I'll ever end up reading it since I consistently find something else I'd rather read first!

I hadn't heard about Medeia's book but I definitely want to add that one to my list.

Hope you and your family enjoyed the 4th! :)

  17. 'For at least twenty minutes, she handed out the story. The youngest kids were soothed by her voice, and everyone else saw visions of the whistler running from the crime scene. Liesel did not. The book thief only saw the mechanics of the words-their bodies stranded on the paper, beaten down for her to walk on.'

The Book Thief moves young adults away from just an entertaining plot to the art of eloquent writing. Perhaps this is why it's not for everyone.

  18. Sorry...I'm just looking over what I wrote and I'm hoping it doesn't come off as condescending as it now sounds. What I mean is that The Book Thief would be classified more as 'literary fiction' unlike most YA books out there...I'm not suggesting 'entertaining' books about first loves or coming of age are unworthy. Personally, I love a good mystery!

    1. Not condescending at all. I am a big lover of literary fiction. In fact, I have my undergraduate degree in literature and my own novel is literary fiction, but The Book Thief was still not as wonderful as I had hoped. I expected more from a story that highlighed German children during the Holocaust versus the Jewish take on the war. I appreciate the way it was written, but it fell flat for me.
