Six Things I Did Today Instead of Writing

1. Slept. I spent last night in the ER with my younger son, Zane. We didn’t arrive home until 1:00 AM.

2. Read. I have been slowly making my way through five different books. Since I am feeling tired and lazy today, reading seemed like a good activity to foster those feelings.

3. Took care of Zane. The ER staff (after running tests) believes Zane is suffering from dehydration from his recent stomach virus. He is being tube fed continuously today, alternating formula and Pedialyte.

4. Took a shower. Typically, this is a given part of my daily regimen. Today it requires some effort. Therefore, it makes the list.

5. Journal writing. A long time ago, I purchased the book, Writing to Heal the Soul by Susan Zimmermann. I bought it after reading her book Keeping Katherine—the story of her life after discovering her daughter had significant disabilities. She realized she needed to grieve the loss of her past life—the life she knew before Katherine. I had not actually read past the introduction of Writing to Heal the Soul until now. But so far, it is an enlightening book. Each chapter contains exercises to work through grief. Given the recent death of my sister-in-law, now seemed like a good time to complete the book. Time to dust off the cobwebbed journal and write. (So, I know, technically this is writing. However, I still am putting off work on my WIP, which I have not touched in a month).

6. Shopping on Amazon. My husband read my query letters. His assessment: they’re not good. Time to buy a book on query letter writing. This Thursday on #ninjachat at Ali’s blog, one of my queries will be critiqued. Honestly, I am not a bad writer. But apparently, my queries say otherwise. No wonder I don't have an agent or a book deal yet.

  1. I hope your son is doing all right. I completely understand about the shower. Good luck with the query writing. I personally find it to be a miserable experience.

  2. Do you read the http://queryshark.blogspot.com/ by Janet Reid? She recommends starting at the beginning and working through (I bounce around) but this is query crit heaven.

Your writing rocks... They can't be THAT bad? O_o

  3. Just stopping by to smile and hold your hand :) Hope you don't mind.

  4. Query writing is a whole different type of writing to fiction writing though. It's about selling your book as a product, and often times the author is too close to their work to be able to see the marketing potential.

Best wishes to you and your family at this difficult time x

  5. Hopped over from the Ninja linky! I'm drafting my latest WiP now too - good luck with your writing! :)

Queries are tough - good luck getting yours polished up and ready for show time. :)

And it sounds like you did six important things today, something that can't always be said about every day. :) I hope your son is better soon.

  6. Hopping over from the Ninja linky. Queries seem impossible and no matter how many books I write, I don't think they'll ever come easy. Sigh.

I hope your son is beginning to feel better.

  7. I wish you joy. I'm also concerned about your query writing quest. I am sure you can get sincere help from fellow writers in the blogiverse.

We wish you the best of luck with everything, especially Zane.

  8. My thoughts are with you. Hope your son is getting better and that you're finding some comfort in your journal writing. I do believe in the benefits of therapeutic writing but I also know how hard it is to get yourself to do it when you need to.

  9. Poor Zane! I hope that he gets better and soon. There is nothing worse than that feeling for both him and you. And be careful on Amazon; every time I go on there I always end up buying way more then I intended on!
