I have only just begun this memoir, so I do not yet have any commentary.

This book truly moved me. Especially the section on Rwanda and the people’s attempts to heal from the 1994 genocide. I truly felt like a part of a whole when I read this. At the same time, I felt complicit in my ignorance about the details and extent of the genocide. This book really sparks the part of me that thrives on implementing social change.
What do you think you’ll read next?
I downloaded sample chapters to my Kindle from...
and
Both are books on Rwanda after the genocide. I can’t believe I knew so little about this atrocity until picking up Terry Tempest Williams’ book. I want to try them out before making a purchase.
Sorry to Ann Patchett's Truth and Beauty, which remains shelved for now.

Rwanda, wow, what can one say it's absolutely horrible what happens, and what happens still daily. I wish there was more a single person could do to help.
ReplyDeleteBecame a follower of yours. :)

Susan, I've not heard of any of those books. They sound interesting. Have you read Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust by Immaculee Ilibagiza? That is a tremendous book. I cried throughout reading it. I'm busy trying to finish a wip so I'm not reading at the moment. Hope to get back to a good book soon!
ReplyDeleteHi Kris, I found that book after making the post. I downloaded a sample chapter from that book, too. It received excellent reviews. Thanks for the suggestion. I need to finish my wip, as well. Happy writing!
ReplyDeleteGreat reads! I haven't heard of these yet, but they are being added to my TBR list. Thank you for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteI have deleted my words in this comment three times. I simply can't get them right. You've got some very serious reading this week, but it's such a heavy subject that words simply can't express it correctly.
ReplyDeleteSad about Rwanda, sad about genocide anywhere.
ReplyDeleteRwanda is heartbreaking.

I just read Bestest Ramadan Ever by Medeia Sharif. I'm now reading The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab. And I think I'll read The Folk Keeper by Franny Billingsley next.
ReplyDeleteI'm here, Susan, because you're the "winner" of a copy of my memoir. I just left a comment on Zane's blog, which included this message:
ReplyDeleteI can't find your email address anywhere, so I need you to send it to me at annbest37 @ yahoo dot com so I can gift a copy of the book to your new Kindle!
And now I'm here to truly meet you.
I read Terry Tempest Williams' book Refuge maybe 15 years ago and loved it. She's a fantastic writer and a beautiful woman (I just found her through Google search) and now I'm interested in reading more of her.
Rwanda: The book above, A Thousand Hills, reminded me of Over A Thousand Hills I Walk With you that I found about 3 years ago in the library--basically a YA novel of the awful heartbreak of this time in history. The book was stunning. Through Amazon used book sellers, there's one for 9 cents plus 3.99 S&H. Or you might find it in your local library. I highly recommend it.
Ann Best, Author of In the Mirror, A Memoir of Shattered Secrets
Hi, Susan, I'm so glad Ann Best recommended your blog; I'm also glad to be a new follower!
ReplyDeleteLet's see ... I just finished reading the ARC for Sheila Dalton's psychological drama The Girl in the Box, which is scheduled for release in November; wow, this was a book review that practically wrote itself Sheila's writing is so powerful.
I'm just finishing up Katie Gates's The Somebody Who, whose main character is married to someone with Alzheimer's. This is another book I'm honored to have read and review.
And next up? A couple of reference books about the KKK for my second historical YA.
Wishing you a great day!
