S: Suicide
One of the toughest issues so far. The New YorkDaily News reported in June 2012 that 1 in 6 high school students has seriously considered suicide and 1 in 12 has attempted it (based on 2012 report from the CDC). That is absolutely staggering.
If you’re having suicidal thoughts, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433).
Today’s song: Loser by Three Doors Down
Cause I’m a loser and sooner or later
You know I’ll be dead
You’re getting closer,
You’re holding the rope and
I’m taking the fall
Cause I’m a loser
You’re getting closer, to pushing me
Off of life’s little edge

It's such a terrible issue, and one that needs to be discussed more openly. Tragic statistics.

Parents, teachers, friends can help. There are often signs that teens exhibit and it's possible to intervene. The problem is that we can't think of someone we care for is considering ending their life.
ReplyDeleteIt's so heartbreaking to imagine young people with their whole lives in front of them feeling as if they have no hope. Just unbearably tragic.

ReplyDeleteThat breaks my heart that 1 in 6 high school students contemplates suicide--not to mention that 1 in 12 attempts it. So sad.
