Culture Club

Okay, I confess. I liked Culture Club. Not enough to own an album, but I'd stay tuned when the video came on MTV. Maybe even poised myself to hit the record button on the VCR. Remember those days? Waiting for a video to play, then rushing to get it manually recorded without commercials or VJ interruptions?

In my high school, there were a few who tried to emulate the Boy George look. And, indeed, he made the flat top fedora popular around our school.

Last year, Boy George announced at 2012 reunion. But I have yet to read any confirmation of this. And honestly, some bands are better left in the 1980s.

Other Cs from the 1980s:

Cassette tapes
Cordless phones (the massive-sized ones)

Cyndi Lauper
The Cosby Show

Any others?

  1. I still have, and use, my VCR, my cordless phone (I even have one that isn't cordless), and my cassette tapes. :)

  2. HAHA...that video is so funny. I'd totally forgotten about them. The '80s was a strange time, wasn't it?

(I just noticed your blog tour is coming up. So cool!!)

  3. I remember a huge debate over whether Boy George was a boy or a girl... I know, I know, the clue's in the name, but we were only 8 or something!

  4. My 49 year old disabled daughter loves Cyndi Lauper, and we both love the Cosby Show. And I just bought your Life as a Misfit and look forward to reading it!

  5. I still have a VCR, never use it but it's there. It's been ages since I heard that song and yep The Cosby Show was great.

  6. Funny how technology advances at an alarming rate - cassettes replaced CDs which in turn are replaced by MP3 files.....

Video has died in favour of DVD's - now our latest SkyBox means our digital recorder is only used to play purchased DVDs.....

Smart-phones replacing the need to fire up the laptop so often.....

I must be really old - when I was 3 years old we only had black and white TV (and only 2 stations, here in the UK then!) - I've seen so many changes!

Nice post, this - certainly given me pause for thought! ;-)

  9. Culture Club was one of my choices, but I went with The Cure. "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" was a really good song.

  10. Hello Susan,

What a great post! I think this is my new favorite blog! I will definitely be back to see what you dream up for the other letters, and to read more of your lovely writing. I am following now.

I am doing the A to Z Challenge as well. Take a peek at my blog too if you get a chance! I write humor, and everyone says I am the funniest person on the planet (well, maybe it is just the voices in my head saying that—that’s the doctor’s latest explanation—but I will take what I can get).

    Best,

  13. I liked Culture Club too, although the video certainly seems ridiculous now LOL. I can't imagine a reunion, definitely think this is one that needs to stay in the 80s.

  14. I did not care for Boy George, but there were plenty of great bands from the 80's.
I have had close to a dozen cd players (mostly portable with cassette and am-fm radio) break on me, so I am still relying on cassettes; which is great because I bought a cassette radio for $1.00 and often get cassettes at thrift stores for 25 cents.

  15. I loved the Culture Club. The song "Time" is one of my favorites from the 80's. I used to call radio stations to request songs (remember when you could do that?) and then I'd record the song on a cassette tape. I loved making mixed tapes!

  16. I was mad about Culture Club. I was a teenager in the '80's, so I'm glad I've found you :-)
