Madonna, MTV, and My Life as a Misfit

Lots of 1980s Ms to share today.

Madonna was a defining music figure in the 1980s, and many girls tried to copy her look:

MTV was huge! I mean, it was a total phenomenon. The 80s was the true dawn of music videos, and you had a real edge in the social world if your parents paid for MTV (mine did):

That said, my book of four memoirs (My Life as a Misfit) takes place in the 1980s:

Other Ms from the 1980s:

Men at Work
Men Without Hats
Mommie Dearest
Motley Crue
Modern English

I know I'm missing some. Can you think of any more?

  1. Your book cover makes more sense, now that I know it's set in the 80s! Wild tights and those Madonna half gloves... lol, what will I do when my daughter starts trying the new trends - although many of the 80s trends are back now...
Loving this time tripping you're doing!

  2. I am not a Madonna fan, and during the 80's I worked two jobs. I got interested in classical music in the late 70's so when I could play my radio at work it was that type I mostly listened to.
I did like The Bangles but that doesn't begin with M. But Mozart does and that music will stand long.

  3. Mullets, natch!

Marillion - think they were pretty big in the 80s.

    Definitely Madonna's best era too.

  4. My parents didn't have cable, so I loved walking to my best friend's house after school and watching MTV with her. It's funny now to think what a huge thing MTV was then. I also tried to copy the Madonna "Desperately Seeking Susan" look, although thankfully there are no pictures of this phase. :D

I'm really looking forward to reading your memoir!!

  6. Mannequin? I remember the film, but I can't remember if it was any good - I was very young.

  7. Oh, I wore the dang bow in my hair and had a bazillion rubber bracelets. We did not have MTV, but my friend Amy did. I spent a lot of time at her house.

Um, Michael Jackson!!! When Thriller debuted, I must have stayed tuned to that channel to watch it over and over again.

  8. I miss the days when MTV played music and had substantial shows. I'd love to get some of Madonna's Eighties albums to add to my large vinyl collection.
